AUDIT YOUR WEBSITE FIRST

Before you start optimizing every on page SEO element and have a perfectly optimized page, it is important to know about the web page you are optimizing and eliminate problems that could be hindering the page form achieving top ranking.

An SEO site audit will help you see basic on-page SEO elements like page titles, keywords and URLs, and find out whether they are optimized following up to date on SEO techniques, and take necessary steps to resolve the page optimization issues the web page might have.

RESPONSIVE DESIGN & ON PAGE SEO

Responsive Desig and On-Page SEOYou can't expect to have a perfectly optimize web page without thinking of responsive design. Just in case you were not aware or were living under a rock, Google started penalizing websites that are not mobile friendly, or responsive years ago, and will continue to do so till there is no mobile unfriendly sites on the web.

So no matter how perfectly you've implemented your on page SEO optimization elements, if your site is not responsive, then don't expect your web page to rank, or even show up on SERPs

ON PAGE OPTIMIZATION & STRUCTURED DATA - SCHEMA.ORG

On-page Optimization and Structured DataHelp search engines not only understand what your page is about, but also understand what your page is saying through structured data.

Will this help your SEO campaign?

I not only believe it will improve your ranking, it will also provide more information to searchers than the standard results in SERPs.

Note:

If you have a Joomla website and wants to take full control of your Google search results, then I highly recommend Tassos Marinos' Google Structured Data extension for Joomla.

MAKE YOUR PAGE LOAD TIME FAST

Google did make page speed a ranking factor. What this means is that even of your other on page SEO elements are perfectly optimized, but your web page takes 3 seconds, or more to load, then chances of achieving top ranking in Google search results will be slim.

Plus, if your web page is slow, don't expect your visitors to come back and visit your website again.

So get on board and Speed Up Your Website.

Site Speed and On-Page SEO

Looking at the YSlow Score Tab below, you'll see that the only thing preventing us from achieving a Grade A (100) is the 'Add Expires header' recommendation. We could've created a file with Google's Analytics JavaScript information, hosted on our server, instead of Google's, setup a Cron Job to be update it automatically on a daily basis, to help us achieve a Grade (A)...

However, since we know that the below result will not affect our score in a negative way.BuzFind YSlow 'Add Expires Header' image

BETTER ON-PAGE SEO OPTIMIZATION WITH SHORT URL

Google prefers short URLs, therefore, you should do everything possible to serve what search engines prefer and short URLs are one of them because they are easier to parse by search engines, easier to copy and shared on social media by your readers, and so on.

Always think of your users first and know that shorter URLs provide better user experience. Thinking of your users will bring you rewards from search engines.

SEO FRIENDLY URL

Even though search engines can read long URLs, it is better to avoid ugly and long URLs.

Below is one example of long, SEO unfriendly and ugly URL

SEO Unfriendly URL image

INSERT MAIN KEYWORD EARLY IN URL

Without keyword, search engines won't know what your page is about.

Having your main keyword in your URLs is good, however having it appear earlier in the URL is even better.

Check out the below image showing this article's short, SEO friendly and optimized with main keyword early in the URL

Don't forget to use Hyphens ( - ) and not Underscore ( _ ) when writing your URLs

example:

  • Good URL: https://buzfind.com/blog/on-page-seo-techniques
  • Bad URL: https://buzfind.com/blog/on_page_seo_techniques

WRITE AN ENTICING AND KEYWORD RICH TITLE

Don't keyword spam your Title.

Instead...

  • Start your page title with your primary keyword
  • Have your secondary keyword, or a semantic keyword in the middle
  • Then something to entice searcher to click on your link on SERPs, and not your competition

For this article page title (browser's title), we decided to use the following;

On-Page SEO | On page SEO techniques for a perfectly optimized page

META DESCRIPTION AND ON-PAGE OPTIMIZATION

Many stopped or forget to write a good meta description for their page(s), and to be honest, this is a big mistake.

We know that the meta description stopped being a ranking signals some years ago, and because of that, I believe some website owners, and not SEO experts, stopped caring about its use.

Meta Descriptions are actually important, maybe not for your ranking, but click through.

Just as the page title is important, especially when it is used to entice searchers to click on your link on SERPs, meta descriptions can do the same and have the same results of bringing visitors and possibly customers to your website, or online business.

It is actually not difficult to write a great meta description that says 'click me, click me'.

All you have to do is take the time and don't rush.

The meta description we chose to write for this article is as follow:

On-Page SEO | Looking for on page SEO techniques that will result into a perfectly optimized web page? Then check out our on-page optimization checklist now

As you can see above, we started our meta description;

  • With our secondary keyword ' on-page SEO'
  • Then we continued with the 'on page SEO techniques' keyword
  • And finished with 'on-page optimization'

We did this because we want those keywords to be highlighted on SERPs. One of them can be highlight, maybe two, or maybe all of them. Time will tell.

BOOST ON-PAGE OPTIMIZATION WITH MAIN KEYWORD IN H1 TAG

Optimized on page SEO heading imageWe know that Headings (H1 - H2) helps improve your content layout, make it easy to structure your copy for easier read, and so on.

The best Headings obtained when;

  • You don't slap them into the copy willy nilly
  • You include your main keyword in your H1 heading tag
  • You remember to wrap your H2 with your secondary keyword
  • Use your LSI, or semantic keyword in your H2, and H3 heading tags

WRITE GREAT, RELEVANT LONG CONTENT

Content, high quality and relevant content is what makes or breaks your on-page SEO campaign.

Studies have shown that pages with longer content, relevant of course, tends to rank better on Google search result than their conter part pages with thin content.

I am not saying you should write a 3000 word page that is not helpful, doesn't answer a question or help someone, or offers nothing but words slapped together to form a bunch of useless paragraphs.

INSERT YOUR KEYWORD EARLY IN THE FIRST PARAGRAPH - DON'T SPAM KEYWORD

We are back to keyword again...

Remember to insert your main keyword as early as possible in your first paragraph while making sure the sentence makes sense.

Also, make sure you don't keyword spam your content...

To avoid falling into the keyword spam trap, you can use your secondary keyword and even LSIs throughout your copy.

ADD SOME PIZZAZZ WITH IMAGES/VIDEOS

A well written copy might be great for search engines, but not so good for your readers if your content doesn't include some type of media to add some pizzazz and make your copy more enjoyable to read.

So add an image or two, but don't go overboard.

While at it, make sure your images files are SEO optimized, have a small file size.

Don't forget to also write a relevant Alt tag and better describe the image using your main keyword, or secondary/LSI if main keyword was already used in another image within the copy.

Also, when naming your image file, use Hyphens (see below), and not Underscore ( _ )

For example - Our main image used at the beginning of this article has been optimized as the following;

  • File Name: on-page-seo-techniques.png
  • Image File Size: 8KB
  • Image Alt Tag: On Page SEO technique image

INTERLINK PAGES ACCORDINGLY

Inter-linking your important pages is a good practice and one that can help increase your page indexability and improve ranking.

Always inter link your page to another important page with relevant content, or one that support the page you are writing.

For example...

Your landing page should have links going to other important pages using different anchor text and different title.

ADD OUTBOUND LINKS TO AUTHORITATIVE SITES WITH RELEVANT CONTENT

If you found some great content relevant to yours on other authoritative sites, then share them with your readers by inserting an outbound link in your copy.

Doing so with help Google figure out the topic of your page, plus, have your page outrank other pages without outbound links.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, SHARE IT ON SOCIAL SITES

Don't forget to share your great content on social sites even if you believe that social signals won't help improve your ranking.

Since you want to bring more traffic to your web page, and have your visitors enjoy reading your content, I recommend that you still use social media.

Plus, it won't hurt your ranking!

Can you implement on-page SEO techniques yourself? Yes you can...

Provided you know what search engines are, how they work and the on-page optimization factors.
