Why easy reading matters

Most people don’t read a web page word for word. They skim it, often on a phone. When sentences run long and the words are hard, they get tired and go back to the search results.

What this tool measures

For English text, we use the Flesch reading ease score. It looks at how many syllables your words have and how many words your sentences have, and gives a score from 0 to 100. Higher means easier. A score of 60 or more is comfortable for most adults. We also show a grade level, word count, sentence count and reading time.

What the score is not

Google doesn’t use a readability score to rank pages. This number is for people: clear writing keeps visitors on the page long enough to understand what you offer and call you. Use it as a guide, not a rule.

Tips for clearer writing

  • Keep sentences short. If one runs past 20 words, split it in two.
  • Pick plain words: “use” instead of “utilize”, “help” instead of “facilitate”.
  • Put the most important point at the start of each paragraph.
  • Break the page up with headings and lists so it’s easy to skim.
  • Write the way you’d talk to a customer standing in front of you.
